Based at Summerhill Farm Stays, you’re in a prime location to experience some of the best walks the area has to offer. Here are a few of our favourites.

Waterside Hill – Dalry’s Hidden Gem

One of our most loved local routes is the hike up Waterside Hill, which sits proudly behind the village of Dalry. The walk begins gently before climbing steadily to the summit, where you’ll be treated to sweeping views of the Glenkens. This walk is ideal for those looking for a quiet escape into nature with the added reward of a breathtaking panoramic views at the top.

Galloway Forest Park – Start from Clatteringshaws

Galloway Forest Park, known as the “gateway to the Galloway Hills.” With over 300 square miles of woodlands, lochs, and open moorlands, this is one of the most spectacular areas to explore in Dumfries and Galloway. A great starting point is Clatteringshaws Loch, where you can enjoy waterside walks, spot wildlife, or tackle some of the longer hill routes.

Southern Upland Way – A Journey Across Southern Scotland

The Southern Upland Way is one of Scotland’s best-known long-distance walks, stretching across the southern part of the country. Whether you’re up for a serious multi-day hike or just looking to explore part of the route, the section around St John’s Town of Dalry is an incredible introduction to the wild landscapes of Dumfries and Galloway. The trail takes you through rugged hills, quiet forests, and alongside picturesque lochs. It’s perfect for hikers who want to feel immersed in the untamed beauty of southern Scotland.

Rockcliffe to Kippford – Coastal Charm

For those who prefer coastal walks, the path between Rockcliffe and Kippford along the Solway Firth offers a delightful change of scenery. This is a more leisurely walk, but no less beautiful, as it weaves through woodland and along rocky shores with constant views of the sea, ending the walk in Kippford, a charming coastal village, is the perfect reward, where you can stop at one of the local cafes or pubs to relax or grab a treat from the regular ice cream van.

Screel Hill – A Steep Climb with Stunning Views

If you’re after a shorter but challenging hill walk, look no further than Screel Hill. Located near Dalbeattie, this route offers a steep ascent through dense forest before emerging onto the hilly landscape. As you climb, the views become increasingly impressive, culminating in a panoramic view of the Solway Coast and surrounding hills. On a clear day, you can even spot the Lake District across the water. Screel Hill is perfect for walkers seeking a rewarding hike that can be completed in just a few hours.
